Thousands of Dollars won in
2008 Ultra Centric!
Running Winner
The USATF certified course proved challenging for many, coupled with 30 mph winds, and sub-freezing night time temperatures. However adverse the conditions, the winners equaled, or, excelled on previous Ultra Centric performances.
Attila Vozar of the Hungarian National Team was a mere three tenths of a mile shy of Konya’s 2007 run of 146.33. Vozas’s winning mileage of 146.034 earned him $3,000.00,
with $1,000.00 of that coming as “a first time participating winner.”
First time 24 hour runner Elisha Tanui of McKinney, Texas completed 139.080 miles for a second place overall début. Tanui’s run earned a payday of $1,500.00, with $1,000.00 coming as a “first time participating winner”.
The U.S. National 24 Hour Championships were awarded to Byron Lane, and Jen Van Allen. Lane won third overall with 122.854 mi, and Van Allen took fourth overall with 121.695; neither were within striking distance of published prize money parameters.
Tracy Thomas bested the women’s 48 Hour Ultra Centric’s event record with a weekend 154.147 mile total. Thomas handily won the women’s championship.
Tony Mangan of Ireland bettered David Goggins 48 hour performance of 2007 by nearly a half mile. The hope for world class performances in The Ultra Centric 48 Hour remains by continuing to offer prize money for notorious results.
Biking Winners
The world’s first 48 hour mountain bike solo of The Ultra Centric Experience was truly a challenge. Before Sunday would arrive, four racers exceeded 1,170 miles.
Overall, the mountain bikers were awarded $ 9,500.00 of a possible $ 20,000.00 in prize money available to them. The money was awarded using a rigorous “minimum mileage” standard posted on the events website. Many participants said the “minimum mileage” standards were too challenging, even unreasonable. Five of the more courageous cyclist proved them wrong.
Chris Janiszewski of Florida, completed 27 laps, 222.75 miles for his 24 hour solo victory and a $ 3,000.00 payday.
The first ever 48 hour solo men’s champion is David Haase of Wisconsin. Haase completed 43 laps, of 8.3 miles, over 356 miles!
Shaun Taylor finished two laps down from Haase’s 43, collectively the two just shy of 700 miles. Taylor adds “with the weather conspiring against us, an already epic challenge was made even harder with constant 30 mph winds and lows of 21 degrees”. “I still shake my head thinking about racing into corners in the middle of the night and not being able to feel my break levers because my hands were numb from the freezing temps”.
Erik Blaty of Arkansas completed 48 hours on his single speed, amassing 32 laps equaling over 265 miles.
The women’s field in the solo 48 hour was well represented in quality over quantity.
Sarah Miller of Arkansas not shy among her male peers, collected over 200 miles in her 48 hour victory.
Teams also competed in The Ultra Centric Experience, compromising eighty percent of participants.
The first place coed four person 24 hour team was led by Mountain Bikers credited founder Keith Bontrager, and sponsored by Richardson Bikemart. Bontrager’s team collected 38 laps, and turned coed by RBM’s own Kim Chance.
The Ultra Centric’s event organizer credited the superb trail conditions to the persistence of Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association’s Erwin Park Trail Steward Bill Skalenda. Skalenda and his trail crew spent countless hours in Erwin policing the safety of the trail, removing potential rider hazards. D.O.R.B.A. even had a team on stand by with the necessary tools to remove fallen brush for the entire event. Barry Bishop led the course marking, and course safety reviews. Bishop also saw to the course returning to a markings free state upon the events conclusion. No small feat when eight miles of trail are involved.
The Ultra Centric Experience will not be lowering the lofty published minimum mileage standards from 2008 for 2009. The event will again offer over forty thousand dollars in 2009, marketing to participants to raise the performances.
